What if someone wants to launch a Transition Town but doesn't know where to start? How can they generate excitement and engagement within their community?

This practice can help —it's a simple community gathering method: hosting a curated film night in a specific local community.

Some ideas to host a Film Night to (re)Launch Transition

We've successfully facilitated many of these film nights with a set of straightforward steps.

We focus on creating an event that draws people in, providing a space for them to mingle and get to know each other. The night typically starts with a screening of 'Farm for the Future,' as it so closely aligns well with the Transition movement. After the film, small groups discuss their learnings and share insights.

The facilitators then briefly introduces Transition Towns, often including screening Rob Hopkins' TED Talk. Be sure to create reflection space, encouraging participants to explore how their passions align with the Transition model. This leads to emergent connections and synergies. The whole group splits into subgroups based on interests (e.g., social justice, economics, food growing), fostering relationships and collaborative efforts.

The facilitator also shares resources from the Transition Network, supporting practical needs such as governance and finding resources. Near the end of the film night, the facilitator organizes a follow-up meeting for interested groups to develop a common vision, mission, and aims.

Over the years, we've witnessed the success of this approach, with projects and groups sparked from these film nights. Examples include a community forest garden in Valentines Park, a 12-year-old food co-op in Brixton, and a long-running permaculture film night in Clapham, which has generated numerous connections, projects, and actions!
