Technology connects, entertains, and empowers us in wonderful ways and also so much of it now seems designed to capture our attention for systems that don’t have our well-being at heart. This tension leaves many of us caught between two poles: embracing technology uncritically or rejecting it outright. As both a technologist and a meditator, I’ve been living in this tension and have discovered a third way.

Some ideas to practise rewiring your relationship with technology

This practice invites us into that middle path by bringing mindfulness to our relationship with technology. The practice blends simple, bite-sized strategies drawn from meditation with insights into how technologies are designed.

It includes formal exercises, guided practices that help us sit, pause, and notice our patterns of attention, as well as informal techniques for reframing how we engage with devices in the flow of everyday life.

By noticing the role technology plays in our daily transitions - from one task, thought, or breath to the next - we begin to shift from distraction to clarity, from autopilot to intention. This creates resilience, focus, and spaciousness, strengthening our ability to meet both personal and collective challenges.

These tools are not about withdrawal, nor about blind embrace. They are about cultivating awareness, so that the technologies we use serve what truly matters. In teaching, community practice, and lived experience, these strategies have consistently helped people feel more grounded, creative, and aligned with their deeper values, even in the midst of our bewildering and uncertain digital and non-digital world.
